Athyrium 'Metallicum', nicknamed Japanese Painted Fern , is a spectacular terrestrial and deciduous fern , known for its triangular fronds that unfurl foliage with silvery and bluish-grey reflections, beautifully enhanced by purple (burgundy) veins.
Very hardy and ideal for planting in shade and/or moist conditions . Its compact, bushy habit and unique color make it a striking addition to brighten dark areas. Although primarily used as an outdoor plant, it can be grown indoors without any problems, provided its need for cool, humid conditions is met.

Packaging and cushioning

Shade or Cool Partial Shade. It prefers dimly lit locations, such as undergrowth or the north side of a wall. Direct sunlight should be avoided, as it will scorch the foliage and cause it to lose its metallic sheen.
Deciduous. The fronds disappear in winter (the plant is dormant) and reappear in spring. Cut back the dry fronds in late winter before the new shoots appear.
Regular and abundant watering is essential. The soil should remain consistently moist, especially during the growing season. Absolutely avoid allowing the substrate to dry out, particularly if grown in a pot.
Very good (down to -15 to -20°C). It is a perfect fern for temperate climates.
Rich, humus-rich, and well-drained soil. It thrives in soils heavy with organic matter (potting soil, compost, decomposed leaves). Although tolerant, it prefers a neutral to slightly acidic pH.
Light. An application of compost or a light organic fertilizer in the spring is sufficient when the plants begin to grow again. Ferns are not heavy feeders.
Easily propagated by dividing the clumps in spring.
Shaded flowerbeds, undergrowth, borders, shaded rock gardens or large pot on a terrace (where watering will need to be monitored).
