It prefers dim, indirect light or shade. It is perfect for dimly lit rooms. Direct sunlight should be avoided at all costs as it burns its delicate fronds.
Watering should be regular to keep the soil constantly moist, but never waterlogged (especially if it is in a pot). Allow the soil to dry out very slightly on the surface between waterings. Reduce the frequency in winter.
Like most ferns, it thrives in high humidity. Don't hesitate to mist it often, especially if grown indoors with heat. This is why it is often recommended for bathrooms or terrariums/paludariums.
Use a rich (humus-rich) and well-draining potting soil. A good quality potting mix, possibly lightened with perlite, is ideal. Good pot drainage is essential.
It prefers cool, moderate temperatures (ideally between 10 and 25°C). It does not tolerate frost (some varieties are less hardy than the classic Athyrium filix-femina). Avoid direct heat sources and drafts.
Maintenance is limited to removing yellow or dried-out fronds as they appear to stimulate the production of new shoots and maintain a neat appearance.
A liquid fertilizer for green plants, diluted to half strength, can be applied once a month during the growing period (spring and summer).
