Selaginella apoda, also known as the "stalkless star fern", is a small perennial plant that belongs to the Selaginellaceae family, along with Selaginella uncinata .

It is distinguished by its bright green fronds, arranged in a star-shaped rosette, hence its nickname.

Unlike true ferns, Selaginella apoda does not produce spores on separate fronds, but rather on special structures called sporangia, located on the fronds themselves.

It is often used as a houseplant or in shade gardens because of its attractive form and ease of care.

Growing tips for Selaginella apoda

Light

Place Selaginella apoda in a bright location, but avoid direct sunlight, as it prefers subdued light conditions. An east or west facing window is usually ideal.

Temperature

This plant appreciates moderate temperatures. Avoid cold drafts and extreme temperatures. It grows well at temperatures between 15°C and 24°C.

Humidity

Selaginella apoda requires relatively high humidity to thrive. You can increase the humidity around the plant by using a water tray filled with pebbles or a humidifier. Spray the fronds with water regularly to maintain a sufficient humidity.

Watering

Keep the substrate constantly moist, but avoid water stagnation. Regular watering is essential. It is recommended to use water at room temperature to avoid shocking the plant.

Ground

Use a good quality, well-draining potting soil enriched with organic matter. You can also add perlite or sand to improve drainage if necessary.

Fertilization

Fertilize Selaginella apoda with a diluted balanced fertilizer approximately every two months during the growing season (spring and summer). Reduce the frequency during the fall and winter.
