Native to tropical America , the creeping callisia is called "turtle vine" in the Antilles. The richness of its sap in minerals makes it a delicacy for certain pets such as turtles, chameleons and parakeets... It is an excellent food supplement .

But of course it makes a perfect ornamental plant (its name comes from the Greek kallos which means "beauty") with fleshy, dense and compact foliage, initially upright then drooping. It grows quickly, easily outdoors or indoors when it is cool. The flowers are pure white and give off a scent reminiscent of violets.

Available in 9cm pot or in pack of 10 branches for transplanting.

When you receive the branches to be replanted , simply stick them halfway into the potting soil , the Callisia roots very easily and quickly!

Callisia repens: Care and growing tips for an easy creeping plant

Callisia repens, with its small, round leaves and creeping habit, is a charming and easy-to-grow houseplant. Its delicate appearance brings a touch of greenery to any space.

Interest in terrarium

Callisia repens is a great option for terrariums, where its need for high humidity can be easily met. It thrives in a warm, humid environment , making it an ideal choice for tropical terrariums.

Exposure and temperature

  • Light: Callisia repens prefers bright but indirect light. Avoid direct exposure to sunlight, as it can burn the leaves.
  • Temperature: The ideal temperature for Callisia repens is between 18°C and 24°C. It does not tolerate temperatures below 15°C.

Watering

    • Callisia repens needs regular watering to keep the substrate constantly moist, but not soggy .

  • Allow the top layer of soil to dry out slightly between waterings to prevent root rot.

Substrate

Fertilizer

  • During the growing season (spring and summer), feed with a balanced liquid houseplant fertilizer every two weeks.
  • Dilute the fertilizer halfway to avoid burning the roots.
  • Reduce or stop fertilizing in fall and winter.

Repotting

  • Repot Callisia repens every 2-3 years, in spring, in a pot slightly larger than the previous one.
  • Use fresh, well-drained potting soil for repotting.

Multiplication

Callisia repens is easily propagated by stem cuttings in spring and summer.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Overwatering : Overwatering can lead to root rot.
  • Lack of light : A lack of light can weaken the plant and make its foliage dull.
  • Too low temperatures : Too low temperatures can damage the plant.
  • Drafts : Drafts can dry out the plant.

With its delicate foliage and easy growth, Callisia repens is the ideal plant for beginners and lovers of original plants. Let yourself be charmed by its creeping appearance and simple maintenance!

Additional Tips

  • To increase the humidity in the room, you can place a humidifier near your Callisia repens or spray it regularly with non-calcareous water.
  • Pinch back stems to encourage bushier growth.
