Stylidium caespitosum, also known as the " trigger plant ", is a carnivorous plant native to Australia .

Carnivory in Stylidium caespitosum is an active process where the plant uses a rapid "trigger" mechanism to project its gynostemium (an organ unique to the Stylidium resulting from the fusion of the plant's reproductive organs) onto insects.

Although the main role of this mechanism is pollination, it also serves to capture insects, allowing the plant to supplement its nutritional needs through digestion.

Growing and care tips for Stylidium caespitosum

Temperature

Up to 40°C in summer and 0 to 15°C in winter. Tolerates light frosts.

Water

Use only rainwater, demineralized water, or reverse osmosis water. Water that is too hard will cause the plant to die within a few weeks. Do not use bottled water; it generally contains too much salt, which is harmful to the plant. In summer, place the plant in a large saucer with water.

In winter, keep the substrate moist.

Fertilizer

Useless: This carnivorous plant grows naturally in poor soils and occasionally compensates for deficiencies by digesting prey.

Brightness

Shaded but bright location. In winter, artificial light is beneficial.

Substrate

The mixture for carnivorous plants is the basic substrate for many species, you can make it yourself by mixing blond peat , perlite and vermiculite , (4V/1V/1V) or blond peat, and non-calcareous aquarium sand (2V/1V). Easy to propagate!
