Pyrrosia lingua 'Cristata' is a beautiful, relatively rare, epiphytic or epilithic (rock-growing) fern sought after for its unique foliage.

Its evergreen fronds, bluish green or olive green , are distinguished by their crested or cut ends ( cristata ), adding a very graphic and bushy effect. The upper surface of the frond is smooth and leathery, while the reverse side is covered with a white to ochre star-like down ( indumentum ), which gives it excellent resistance to drought and heat .

It is a slow-growing plant with a creeping rhizome that allows it to cling to supports. Ideal for adding a touch of exoticism and texture to a cool interior or terrarium .

CULTIVATION CONDITIONS: PYRROSIA LINGUA 'CRISTATA'

Light

Lively, but indirect. This fern appreciates good light to optimize its growth, but it must be protected from direct sun, especially in summer, which could burn its tough fronds.

Watering

Moderate and Spaced. Allow the substrate to dry slightly between waterings. The plant is sensitive to excess moisture, especially in its rhizome. Watering should be reduced in winter.

Substrate / Support

Ultra-Draining (Imperative). Use an aerated orchid-type mix (bark, sphagnum, coconut) or special fern mix . It is often grown directly mounted on a plate (cork, bark) or rock.

Rhizome

Not Buried. The golden rule: the creeping rhizome of Pyrrosia must never be covered by the substrate , otherwise it will rot. Let it run on the surface.

Temperature / Humidity

Room Temperature. Ideally between 15 and 25°C. Although it is cold tolerant (depending on the strain), the ' Cristata ' variety is generally grown indoors, in a conservatory or temperate/cool terrarium.

Hygrometry

Appreciates atmospheric humidity, making it perfect for a well-ventilated collector's terrarium.

Fertilization

Very Low. If necessary, very light fertilization with a quality special fern fertilizer , applied during the growing season (spring-summer). Never overdose.

Use

Indoor plant, terrarium, veranda or winter garden. Very graphic collector's item.
