Dryopteris carthusiana is an excellent choice for greening and adding a touch of elegance to dark, cool areas of your garden.
It prefers shade or partial shade. It is imperative to avoid direct afternoon sun, which risks burning its delicate fronds. It thrives very well in undergrowth, at the edge of forests, or in beds with little sunlight.
The soil should be kept constantly moist but never soggy. Water regularly, especially during the first year of planting and during summer droughts. Mulching is highly recommended to conserve moisture. Substrate: A humus-rich (humus-bearing), moist, well-drained soil is essential. Improve the soil with compost or leaf mold at planting to increase water retention while ensuring good drainage. Tolerates slightly acidic to neutral pH.
It is an extremely hardy plant, tolerating cold temperatures down to -20 to -25°C. No winter protection is necessary in the ground.
Pruning is limited to cutting back dry and faded fronds (often in late winter or early spring) to clean up the clump and make room for new growth.
It is not demanding. A simple addition of compost around the base in spring is enough to provide it with the nutrients necessary for annual growth. If you don't have any, use our special fertilizer for ferns .
