Asparagus densiflorus : : Care and cultivation tips

Asparagus densiflorus, more commonly known as feathery asparagus or asparagus fern, is a houseplant much appreciated for its light and airy foliage reminiscent of ferns.

Interest in terrarium

Asparagus densiflorus is a great option for humid tropical terrariums. Its drooping stems and delicate foliage create a very aesthetic waterfall effect. In addition, it appreciates the ambient humidity often present in terrariums, which allows it to grow in a confined environment.

Exposure and temperature

  • Exposure: Asparagus densiflorus prefers bright but indirect light. Avoid full sun which could burn its foliage.
  • Temperature: It likes warm and humid temperatures, typical of tropical regions. An average temperature of 20-25°C suits it perfectly.

Watering

Asparagus densiflorus needs regular watering, but avoid spraying the leaves to prevent the appearance of fungal diseases. The substrate must remain slightly moist at all times, without being soggy.

Substrate

Use a light, well-drained substrate, specially designed for indoor plants. You can add perlite or vermiculite to improve drainage.

Fertilizer

Apply a liquid fertilizer for green plants, diluted to half strength, every two weeks during the growing season (spring and summer).

Repotting

Repot your Asparagus densiflorus every 2-3 years, in spring, in a slightly larger pot.

Multiplication

Propagation is mainly done by division of the clump when repotting. You can also try stem cuttings, but the success rate is lower.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Substrate too dry: A lack of water causes yellowing and falling of the leaves.
  • Excess water: Excess water causes root rot.
  • Dry Air: Dry air can cause mealybugs to appear.
  • Lack of light: A lack of light causes the stems to etiolate.

By following these simple tips, you can successfully grow your Asparagus densiflorus and enjoy its elegance.

Additional tips:

  • Pruning: To maintain a compact shape, you can pinch the ends of the stems.
  • Humidity: Spray foliage regularly to increase ambient humidity, especially in winter.
  • Pests: Watch for scale insect and thrip attacks.
