Dionaea muscipula – Classic Venus Flytrap

Dionaea muscipula, the famous carnivorous plant native to the peat bogs of the Carolinas (USA) , is distinguished by its "jaws" — modified leaves forming traps capable of closing rapidly to capture insects and nutrients.

During peak growing season, under bright light and with poor, acidic and constantly moist soil, the Venus flytrap produces highly reactive traps.

Why choose the Dionaea flytrap?

A hardy, perennial, and fascinating species, the Venus flytrap (Dionaea muscipula) offers a surprising spectacle with its vibrant and alluring traps. Easy to grow as long as its needs are met, it's ideal for beginners. Its simple care and adaptability make it a sure bet!

From September to March (rest period) , the Dionaea muscipula takes on a smaller form: the leaves become shorter and remain lying on the ground.

Dionaea muscipula care – Growing tips

Watering the Dionaea muscipula

Use only rainwater , demineralized water, or reverse osmosis water. Water that is too hard (high in calcium) will kill the plant within a few weeks. Do not use bottled water: it contains mineral salts that are harmful to the Venus flytrap. In summer, place the plant in a large saucer of water to keep the substrate moist. In winter, simply keep the substrate moist, but not soggy.

Ideal temperature for Dionaea muscipula

In summer, the Venus flytrap tolerates temperatures above 30°C very well, but not exceeding 45°C. In winter, give it a dormancy period of at least three months (from November-December to March-April) in a bright location between 0 and 15°C . The plant can withstand frost; below -5°C, use a large pot and protect it (with bubble wrap).

Substrate for Dionaea muscipula

Carnivorous plant mix is the basic substrate for most species. You can make it yourself with: sphagnum peat moss , perlite , and vermiculite (4:1:1 ratio), or sphagnum peat moss and non-calcareous aquarium sand (2:1 ratio). Live sphagnum moss is also suitable.
