What is a Tillandsia ?

Tillandsia are mainly epiphyte plants, that is to say they get a grip on organic supports such as tree branches, and also on non-organic objects like electric wires. In fact, they get food from the ambient air ! Their leaves are covered with cells which allow them to absorb humidity, and the streaming waters bring minerals they need.

Tillandsia are part of the Bromeliaceae family. They can be found in America, between Argentina, Chile and South United States.

There are more than 400 species ! The most famous ones are Tillandsia baileyi, Tillandsia bulbosa, Tillandsia butzii, and Tillandsia ionantha, among others. All these plants are easily acclimatizable under our climates as long as temperature does not go below 10°C. Though, a few species can resist to -10°C !

In habitat, the light, fragile and elegant Tillandsia are rocked by winds, hence their nickname "air plants". They are even more magnificent when their long flower stalks open up, protruding an intense red to blue bloom !

Tillandsia - cultivation

Tillandsia are usually easy to grow. They adapt very quickly to their new environment, providing the following few rules are respected :

- Prevent them from direct sun in summer, especially during warm hours. In winter, days being shorter, find a luminous place to incent your plants.

- Put them inside or outside in summer when the weather is fine. They enjoy a tempered house or appartment. Tillandsia can live in a wide range of temperature, from 10°C to 30°C.

- Just like for carnivorous plants, water them with rainwater or demineralized water. You can soak up the plants a few seconds in water, or mist the leaves. In winter, one watering a week is enough. In summer, when the air is drier, mist once a day.

- In spring and summer, it is beneficial to feed them with orchid fertilizer diluted to a quarter twice a month, so as to bring minerals and nitrogen the plants need and cannot find in the ambient atmosphere.

With these few tips, you are now ready to begin a Tillandsia experience ! You will find thorough cultivation advices for each species in their respective cards.

Happy growing :)
