Short story of the carnivory

The history of carnivorous plants can be traced back to the 15th century. Botanists had already recorded some types of Drosera and Pinguicula without having any idea about their uniqueness. It is not until the 18th century that the debate really got underway. In 1875, through research and experiments involving the Drosera genus, Charles Darwin was able to expose the ability of these plants to capture and digest preys. At this point, the idea of carnivorous nutrition enters our knowledge in the plant kingdom.

Battles between science, politics and religion around this theory and its author, followed. Even though most scientists admitted that there is a nutritional interaction between certain plants and insects, it is not until the seventies that scientists were able to chemically prove, through experiments, that plants digest their preys. Being carnivorous isn’t just catching preys, but also includes digestion, using enzymes secreted by the plant itself, or bacteria living in the digestive liquids. The assimilation of the nutritional elements resulting from this process is called digestion.

Today, we officially recognizes more than 600 species of carnivorous plants, belonging to 17 or 18 kinds, which are themselves divided into 10 families.
